My Gear – The things I carry when we go bush to photograph / birds

I buy a lot of stuff on eBay, occasionally Amazon, as sometimes I can find things a little cheaper there. I also trusted that PayPal and eBay supported me as a buyer.

So, I had a Nikon P900, thought I needed to upgrade and it was the ability to easily switch from bird mode to moon mode that convinced me. The P900 did have a little crack on the lens from when I knocked it once, but it did still work adequately, and my friend was willing to purchase the camera knowing that.

Nikon P1000 – picked this up on eBay in used condition – sent from Perth WA, paid about 30% less than retail at the time.

We have a monopod and tripod – rarely used – in fact only realised that they weren’t in the car the other day.

What I wear

  • Hiking trousers
  • Hiking Boots
  • Polo shirt
  • Cap (or full brim depending on the weather)
  • Rain jacket
Shoulder holster – didn’t like the neck straps, tried a couple, so thought I would try this and loved it – eBay purchase https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/133109975077
Protective cover – watched a few P1000 videos on YouTube – knew that camera wasn’t waterproof due to extending lens (had to get the P900 serviced as it became noisy after being caught in some rain) – was using soft plastic vegie bags for a while with a rubber band until I came across these – now one in my bag and one in the car. Bought on Amazon   https://www.amazon.com.au/Ruggard-RC-P18-Rain-Cover-DSLR/dp/B00G4L9I8E/
Waist/bum bag – used mostly in summer and on shorter walks. A backpack often left me hot, sweaty, and uncomfortable. I fit most of what I need in it. See below for what’s in my bag.   Bought on eBay – be mindful of strap sizes, I have a larger waist so 1st one didn’t fir around me, but I gave that to my friend. Bough on eBay. This link is not the one I bought as the seller doesn’t seem to be selling them at the moment.   https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3854729625520

I have 3 spare batteries that I carry in a little black bag that I could put in my pocket if I need to. Plus, a spare SD card and a spare car key.

Large Pocket

  • Rain cover
  • A gaiter (face shield for windy/dusty conditions
  • Bushman’s (dang flies)
  • Snacks
  • Sunglasses fit in here
  • Still has a little bit of room (maybe car keys)

Front zip

  • Mobile phone

Left Front pocket

  • Sunscreen
  • Stingose
  • Small duct tape (shoe repairs, camera repairs, clothes repairs, first aid)

Right front pocket

I’ve been watching a few survival videos and things and stumbled across EDC (everyday carry) – what would you have on you to survive if there was a sudden emergency.

So I have added a few little bits and pieces that were inspired by that.

  • Pocket knife
  • Torch
  • Lighter
  • Cotton buds
  • Band-aids
  • Small zip ties
  • And I got the paracord band free somewhere.
  • Plus, some pain relief in a little blue screw-top container.

What kind of things do you carry?
